Royal Worcester Candlesnuffer

Candlesnuffer’s or Extinguishers as they are more formally called were first manufactured by Royal Worcester in Severn Street in the 1850’s. They were made of porcelain and sold in large numbers either as singles or in pairs. They usually had stands also made of porcelain but one has to assume that both failed to survive in great numbers having fallen from the mantle pieces on which they were normally kept.

The Victorian Candle Extinguisher from Royal Worcester was made from a creamy porcelain known as Parian and these were slip cast in Plaster of Paris moulds and then hand decorated. The early designs of the 1850’s were so popular that some of the master moulds remained in use for 120 years. The most famous and talented maker was a gentleman called James Hadley who was responsible for our very rare and desirable Mr Punch.

Our Mr Punch candlesnuffer is in excellent condition and stands at 3 1/2 inches high with the Royal Worcester mark in green inside. The candle snuffer was made in 1882 and is available for £995 subject to prior sale. (Item 156)
